  • Prescription Interpretation: Analyzing the Optometrist’s findings to recommend the most suitable lens designs (e.g., Progressives, Bifocals, or specialized Myopia Management lenses).
  • Technical Measurements: Taking critical "fitting" measurements that go beyond just PD, such as Vertex Distance, Pantoscopic Tilt, and Face Form Angle, especially for high-end digital or personalized lenses.
  • Lens Selection: Advising patients on lens materials (e.g., 1.61 vs 1.74 index) based on their prescription strength to ensure the glasses are as thin and light as possible.
  • Lens Edging & Glazing: Operating the edger to cut lenses and fit them into frames accurately.
  • Quality Control (QC): Using a Lensmeter (Focimeter) to verify that the finished glasses match the exact prescription and axis before the patient is notified.
  • Advanced Repairs: Handling technical frame repairs that go beyond the skills of a Sales Assistant, such as restringing rimless frames or replacing broken hinges.
  • Fitting & Trials: Fitting standard soft contact lenses and conducting follow-up checks to ensure corneal health and comfort.
  • Patient Training: Teaching new wearers the correct "I&R" (Insertion and Removal) techniques and emphasizing the importance of lens hygiene to prevent infections.
  • Aftercare: Assessing the lens fit on the eye and identifying if a patient needs a change in base curve or material.
  • Preliminary Exams: Assisting the Optometrist by performing initial tests such as Auto-Refraction, Tonometry (checking eye pressure), and sometimes Retinal Imaging or Fundus Photography.
  • History Taking: Documenting a patient's visual history, current complaints, and lifestyle needs before they enter the consultation room.
  • Technical Sales: Supporting Sales Assistants with complex cases where a patient has a high degree of astigmatism or prism requirements.

  • Diploma in Opticianry: A minimum of a 3-year Diploma from an MOC-recognized institution

  • Refraction Excellence: Ability to conduct subjective refraction accurately to determine the best prescription for the patient.
  • Advanced Lens Knowledge: Deep understanding of lens geometry—knowing exactly which lens design (aspheric, digital progressive, etc.) suits a high-astigmatism or high-prescription patient.
  • Workshop & Lab Proficiency: Expert-level skills in lens edging, glazing, and frame "troubleshooting" (e.g., repairing rimless frames or adjusting high-wrap sunglasses).
  • Equipment Mastery: Proficiency in using a manual and automated Lensmeter, Auto-Refractor, and Trial Lens set.
  • Product Expertise: Familiarity with major Malaysian lens suppliers and contact lens brands
  • Myopia Management: Given the current market, experience with myopia control lenses is a major advantage.
  • Language Skills: Ability to explain technical vision concepts in Bahasa Malaysia and English. Proficiency in Mandarin or Cantonese is highly beneficial for many local clinical settings.
  • Ethical Practice: A strong commitment to the MOC Code of Conduct (e.g., not over-prescribing or selling unnecessary products).

Benefits:

  • Offering a commission structure higher than the market average
  • Commissions based on personal sales or hitting shop targets
  • EPF, SOCSO & EIS: Mandatory contributions under Malaysian law
  • Allowances: Fixed monthly allowances for transportation, parking
  • One free pair of prescription glasses per year for the employee.
  • Substantial discounts for immediate family members (parents/siblings) on frames and lenses.
  • CPD Point Support: Sponsorship for registration fees to attend seminars, workshops, or conferences required to maintain their professional license.
  • Specialty Training: Fully funded certification in advanced areas like Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) or Myopia Management
  • Annual Leave: Starting at 12–14 days (scaling up with years of service).
  • Flexible Roster: Since optometry shops usually operate on weekends, offering a 5-day work week or a 6-day work per week
  • Public Holiday Compensation: Since malls often stay open, providing "Replacement Leaves" or double-pay for working on gazetted public holidays.
