Responsibilities:
- Full Registration with MOC: The candidate must be registered under the Second Schedule of the Optical Act 1991.
- Active Annual Practicing Certificate (APC): You must verify that they have a valid APC for 2026. It is a legal requirement to display this certificate at your clinic.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Optometry: A 4-year degree from a recognized institution (e.g., UKM, UiTM, MSU, SEGi, UCSI).
- Professional Qualifying Assessment (PQA): For candidates with foreign degrees not automatically recognized, they must have passed the MOC’s PQA.
- Comprehensive Eye Exams: Proficiency in subjective and objective refraction, binocular vision testing, and slit-lamp biomicroscopy.
- Disease Detection: Ability to screen for and detect ocular pathologies such as Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, and Cataracts.
- Myopia Management: Strong clinical knowledge of current control methods, including specialty lenses and Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) fitting.
- Pediatric Optometry: Skills in managing vision care for children, which is a high-growth area in the Malaysian market.
- Diagnostic Equipment: Mastery of tools like the Fundus Camera, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), and Visual Field (Perimetry) machines.
- Specialty Contact Lenses: Experience fitting RGP, Scleral lenses, or multifocal contact lenses.
- Bilingual Communication: Fluency in English and Bahasa Malaysia is standard. Given the local market, proficiency in Mandarin is often a major competitive advantage for patient consultations.
- Clinical Counseling: The ability to explain medical findings and long-term vision management plans to patients and their family members clearly.
- Ethical Integrity: Adherence to the MOC’s code of ethics regarding patient referrals and professional conduct.
Requirements:
- MOC Registration: Must be registered under the Second Schedule of the Optical Act 1991.
- Valid APC: Must possess a current Annual Practicing Certificate (APC) for the year 2026. You should verify this on the MOC official portal.
- CPD Points: Evidence of active Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points (usually a minimum of 20 points per cycle) to ensure their clinical knowledge is up to date.
- Degree: A Bachelor’s Degree in Optometry from a recognized local university or an equivalent MOC-recognized international institution.
- Clinical Internship: Completion of the required clinical training/internship hours as mandated by their university and the MOC.
- Comprehensive Eye Exams: Proficiency in subjective/objective refraction and binocular vision assessment.
- Ocular Health Screening: Ability to use a Slit Lamp, Fundus Camera, or OCT to detect conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy.
- Contact Lens Fitting: Expertise in fitting soft, RGP, and specialty lenses (Multifocals).
- Myopia Management: Strong knowledge of Ortho-K and myopia control spectacle lenses
- Bilingual Proficiency: Fluency in English and Bahasa Malaysia.
- Patient Counseling: The ability to translate clinical findings into simple, actionable advice for patients and parents.
- Ethical Conduct: A clean professional record with no history of disciplinary action by the MOC.
- Retail Awareness: While primarily clinical, an optometrist in a retail setting should understand the business side, including how to recommend high-quality lens products that suit the patient's lifestyle.
