Beyond the Horizon: Rose K2™ XL Semi-Scleral Lens for Complex Ocular Surfaces

The Rose K2™ XL is a semi-scleral Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) lens. With a significantly larger diameter than standard RGPs (typically 13.5mm to 16.0mm), the XL is designed to vault entirely over the cornea and rest on the relatively insensitive sclera (the white of the eye). Combining the crisp optics of a rigid lens with the stability of a soft lens, the Rose K2™ XL is the definitive visual solution for severe keratoconus, post-graft cases, and severe dry eye.

Core Technology & Benefits

  • Vaulting Geometry: The core principle of the XL is "to vault." It creates a space filled with saline over the cornea, avoiding any physical contact with the corneal surface. This eliminates mechanical friction on sensitive cones and provides a continuous "fluid reservoir" for the eye.

  • Scleral Landing System: The majority of the lens weight is distributed onto the sclera. Because the sclera has far fewer sensory nerve endings than the cornea, the XL offers a level of comfort that far exceeds that of traditional rigid lenses.

  • Superior Stability and Centration: Due to its large diameter, the lens is highly resistant to decentration or dislodgement. It maintains a stable optical center even during heavy blinking or rapid eye movements, solving the "foreign body sensation" and "wobbling" issues common with smaller RGPs.

  • Aberration and Visual Optimization: By utilizing the fluid reservoir under the lens, it perfectly offsets astigmatism and aberrations caused by extreme corneal irregularities. For patients who cannot tolerate standard RGPs but require high-definition vision, the XL provides exceptional clarity.

QNA

1. Who is the ideal candidate for Rose K2™ XL?
The XL is the primary choice when standard RGPs fail due to poor centration, frequent dislodgement, or extreme corneal sensitivity. Additionally, patients with severe dry eye syndrome or Pellucid Marginal Degeneration (PMD) often find great relief and clarity with this design.

2. Is it difficult to apply such a large lens?
Because of its size, a specific application technique is required (typically using a plunger/inserter). With professional guidance, most patients master the process within a few days. Due to its landing design, many users are surprised by how comfortable it feels once applied.

3. Do I need to use saline every time I put them on?
Yes. Before application, the bowl of the XL lens must be filled with preservative-free saline to ensure no air bubbles are trapped between the lens and the cornea. This "fluid reservoir" is essential for both visual quality and corneal hydration.

4. Can I sleep in the Rose K2™ XL?
No. While manufactured from highly gas-permeable materials, scleral-type lenses are intended for daily wear only. They must be removed, cleaned, and disinfected every night to allow the cornea optimal physiological rest.
